How on earth could three people not like Elizabeth Bennett? That is such a crime, she is the most wonderfully complex character in English Literature! I am most seriously displeased :) I chose Mr. Hurst since he commits the inexcusable crime of being uninteresting.
I completely disagree with all of your top three;
1. Lady Catherine is essential because it is her bossiness that finally brings Darcy and Lizzie together, and her lines in P&P are just so classic: "Are the shades of Pemberly to be thus polluted?" - I love to hate her :)
2. Caroline Bingly is a bit of sad case, I find myself feeling a bit sorry for her. She is the spinster sister, with little prospect of a happy marriage because of her social prejudice.
3. George Wickham: It really is hard for me to defend Wickham, I think like Lizzie I am too forgiving simply because he is just so charming, and that he is destined for a future with such a stupid wife (Lydia). Kind of how I feel about Willoughby, which I don't think we should ignore the similarity in their names. From a moral perspective, I believe that these characters in Jane Austen's eyes where not wholly bad, but it was their intense selfishness that led to their demise (Both were condemned by the author to loveless marriages because they valued money over affection).
What do you both think?
Love your blog and I look forward to more character reviews and exciting posts!
I am so glad to find another Austen lover! Who should I do a review on next? I think I'll do someone from Emma.
And yes Lady Cathrine's lines are classic. I can just hear her snobby accent when she says that line "Are the shades of Pemberly to be thus polluted?" perfectly and sublimly Lady Cathrineish! Yes the way you put it I do sort of feel bad for Caroline and Wickum was destind for life with a horriblly giddy wife. Mr. Hurst is teerriibblllly uninteresting. He is so dull!
